Bred by Gene Hearl and Flown by Roger Mortvedt
Article
by Jeff Travers, AU Awards Chairman
"In
the summer of 2001, I received a call from our President, Tony Sorrentino.
He asked me to serve as AU Awards Chairman. I gladly accepted, as
I have always had a keen interest in the awards program.
In
the course of calculating the Class of 2000-2001 awards, I received
the application for "Oscar", flown by Roger Mortdevt of
Devore, CA. I awarded him 1st in his category. This award is for
the AU Hall of Fame in old birds for the 2001 series, 61-100 loft
category. I am happy to present the following story of AU 99 SD
0712, also known as "Oscar". His performance rivals the
records of some of the best National Aces in Holland and Belgium.
What
can you say about a pigeon with a record that "712" has
other than SUPER? His performance in the 2001 old bird races was
almost beyond belief. "712" flew every race on the old
bird schedule, a total of 12 races in a 13-week period. He was in
the top 10% of the results 11 out of 12 rages, and in the top 10
positions of the 395 concourse six times. "712" logged
approximately 3,879 total airline miles in one racing season. His
race record is as follows:

Now
for a little history on his breeding. "712" is a pure
Devriendt, bred by Gene Hearl. Gene is formally from Port Jefferson
Station, Long Island, New York. He moved to San Diego, California
in 1991. Health problems have kept Gene from participating in any
form of regular competition since his move to California, but every
year, he places a few birds in the big futurities and one-loft races.
"712" was an entry of Gene's in Roger Mortvedt's Devore
Classic, one of the top one-loft races in California..... He was
renamed "Oscar" in honor of Oscar Devriendt."
